Coffee shop risks? - 08-05-2006, 06:54 PM

We are collecting information and designing our business plan for a coffee shop.
We need to answer questions about market and other risks of running such a business.
Can somebody help us with that?
Thanks in advance.

What exactly do you want to know? Is it the paperwork side of it or the hands on running you wish to know about?

Market risks:
Are there any events that could affect your customers' need or demand for your products and/or services during the term of the business plan? If yes, discuss how likely it is that these events will occur and what steps you will take to limit the impact should these events occur.
Other risks:
Discuss any other risks that could affect the success of your business and how you will overcome them.

You might want to have a look at the following book, which you can get from Amazon and various bookshops:

Starting and Running a Sandwich-Coffee Bar: An Insider Guide (Successful Business Start-ups)
~Stephen Miller
How To Books
Paperback - July 1, 2002

It's supposed to be very helpful, so probably worth the small outlay at this stage.

Good luck.

risks would be that you don't get enough customers to cover your costs. Just stick it next to a university they will lap the coffee up. Another risk could be that you get competition opening up next door or someone gets hurt in your shop.

What is the competition?

Are you going to sell food?

What is the level of unemployment in the area?

How many charity shops nearby?

Are you close to colleges, business parks etc? If so will you offer WIFI?

Why would I want to visit your coffee shop?

What age group are you targetting (young will want music and atmosphere, older will want a more gentle approach, elderly will want to use it as a drop in centre).

Is these a bus stop outside - ideal if it's raining - will you offer take away coffee/tea/hot choc etc?

Is is inside or outside the shopping center?

Just a few thoughts for you.

the profit margins on a coffee shop are huge (used to have one)
it's really really easy to make money provided you have a good location

P.S there is even more profit on Tea and as for soft drinks! let's not even go there!

James.
