A more immediate need for us is to find a reliable web designer with broad experience.

This is called 'link exchanging'. It is frowned upon by all the search engines and WILL harm your ranking.

If you were to point visitors to relevant websites without a reciprocal link then all would be fine. But a 2way link is bad news.

And you can't hide from the robots, they spend all their life following links and will soon pick up the exchange. And even if you partake (as some do) in a three way link (A-B, B-C, C-A) you will still get caught out.
