Free map tool - 02-11-2006, 01:56 AM

Hello... just completed http://www.aardvarkmap.net which is a free tool for webmasters to add customised Google Maps to their sites, or to forum posts.

Here's the answers to the questions in the forum guidelines:

General
Is this site completed or under construction?

It's completed.

If completed:
How long has the site been up?

About half a day...

Optimisation
Do you have incoming links?
What keywords are you targeting?

Not as yet... would like to appear for things like "map tool", "add a map", "free maps", "adding google maps"... that kind of thing.

Do you want your code reviewed for errors or improvements?

No.

Marketing
Who is your target audience? Think about:
Gender
Nationality
Age Range
Income/Education level
Likes/Dislikes

Webmasters of novice/moderate ability (advanced users are likely to get into the techie side of adding Google Maps themselves).

Why is your site different from sites selling/offering similar info/goods/services? Why will someone want to do business you?

I don't know of similar services as yet.

How important is usability?

Pretty important. It's at least important that the process of creating a map is considered straight forward.

What is the purpose of the site? (inform, sell, online community, support B&M business, contact info only, etc)

To provide custom maps to webmasters.

Design
Do you want design suggestions?

No.

Thanks

Aaron

So I guess I should move this to "buy/sell/trade" then as you are not asking for a review..

Good luck with the site.

Was thinking exactly the same thing - Aaron has told us what he want's and then asks us not to review the very things that affect the usability of the site!

Effective Web Design - It's not that difficult if you follow the rules.

I'm not looking for comments on code or design. I'm really looking for comments on usability (ie. how easy you think it is for someone to understand what is being offered, and how easy you think it is to create the maps). I'd also appreciate any comments or advice on marketing potential, particularly with a view to virally marketing the site. At present the maps carry a discrete link to Aardvark Map but nothing more. We wanted to keep it fairly low key.

Thanks for any advice,

Aaron

Hi Aaron

I was in a bit of a quandry of what to do with your requests.

You see, I remember a time some years ago when we were starting out on the internet and I popped over to the aardvark business site and started a thread about my company etc

I was then told in no uncertain terms what you thought of people like me on your forum..and that was that...

Until now - here you are trying the same thing with your site, and in fact all of your posts are self promotion...

So what should I do ?

Hi Peter

I can't comment on what you posted as I don't recall it, I'm afraid. As I'm sure you're aware, it's not always easy to decipher what is and isn't spam on a forum. If it was out of line, I'm sorry about that.

As for claiming here that "in fact all of your posts are self promotion" I find that a rather unfair accusation. I have looked back through my post history and that doesn't appear to be the case. There are a couple of ads offering freelancer opportunities, yes... but they were posted in the 'offers and discounts' forum which I assume it what that is for.

And then there's this post which was posted in the website review forum. If people asking for opinions on a website in the website review forum is spam, then I guess I'm guilty as charged...

Ah well,

Aaron

Aaron

Thanks for the free maps, I have just added one to my www.halelife.co.uk site. I am also in the process of developing www.altrinchamlife.co.uk

Do I take it from your login that you are located nearby?

James

Hi James

Small world!

I'm in Cumbria nowadays, but do in fact hail (to pardon the pun) from your part of the world. I was born in Manchester and grew up in Hale (Grange Avenue to be precise!). I was never allowed to go and see Manchester United as a kid, so ended up supporting my local team down the road, hence the altyfc username. (You'll also notice if you go to the Altrincham FC website that there's a banner for one of our sites there, because we pay for their domain costs in return.)

Glad to see your implementation of the maps. Looking good! Great to see the use of the overlays too. As more information is added to each of those sites, you'll see more points plotted over time. Now to have a bit more of a look around your sites...

Nice to meet you,

Aaron
