Business bank account recommendations for online business
14-05-2007, 04:36 PM

I'm in the process of setting up an online venture and need to open a business bank account.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Are there any particular features a business bank account should have if you are an online business?
Thanks in advance.

My only recommendation would not to use HSBC, unless you enjoy a challenge

I would have recommended HSBC before, but not any more.
I would try Barclays - seem like a breath of fresh air after I spoke with them today

Well, there is a huge gap in the market for a bank that actually cares and helps their customers

There is, Peter, but it may well stay a gap, because that aspect of banking (small businesses) isn't really a very profitable one, I think, by comparison with other stuff they're involved with? So a bank manager told me, anyway ...
The best, most reliable and helpful business banking service I've found so far is from Clydesdale Bank (which is now owned by some huge Australian group that also owns Yorkshire Bank). Their telephone and internet services are good. The downside is the shortage of branches (unless you're in Scotland or London).

The banks only care when you're turning over 1 mil+ a year.
Although saying that, I never had a bad experience with Natwest, but we're currently using HSBC for our business banking. The service you receive from any bank will vary greatly from branch to branch.
I went with Natwest originally because they were the only bank to provide a business account to a 16 yr old me in 2002.
Moved to HSBC to benefit from two years free banking and a merchant account for ProTx online payments.

I'm an FSB member and use the co-operative bank for their free banking and I've got to say up until now I've been impressed. Nothing has gone wrong and customer service is always polite and responsive.
I've used both HSBC and Abbey before now and in comparison to the co-op they were completely unprofessional. Hope that helps.
