From what I have read so far there are two overlapping issues, namely: any liability for personal tax and immigration law.

If you are not a British Citizen and you are under immigration control you may not be allowed to work! It depends what visa you are under. A student visa you are allowed to work 25 hours a week but have to do 15 hours study with an Home Office accredited education provider.

Now the personal tax liability. Depending on your status here you may not be liable to pay personal tax, or you may be entitled to recover any personal income tax paid. Again, this depends on your immigration status here in the UK

Hope the above helps but I am not an immigration lawyer but my wife is because she is from Georgia and is on a spousal visa!

Ok. I am a dependent under my mum, and she is with a business visa. This means that when she gets her visa, so do i, which should mean that i should have a business visa...but i will check it up with her and get back to you.

Thanks.

If you are present in the UK for 183 days or more in a given tax year that makes you resident for that tax year and as such liable to UK income tax on your UK and overseas income. Non-residents are liable to UK income tax only on income arising in the UK.

As to whether you’re permitted to work in the UK this is certainly not my area of expertise and it’s probably worth you speaking to an immigration expert about this. But one way or another it looks to me as if you’re going to have to pay tax on your earnings.

You need to apply for a National Insurance number through your local Jobcentre Plus office, Jobcentre or social security office – not the council. Details can be found here.

I didnt know you can do it through a jobcentre plus too???....

....so to be on the safe side of things, i should register my account for tax? But how will i do this if i have not yet got an NI number, and will not be able to get one for a few months?

I am aware that you can use a 'made-up NI number until you have been issued with one from the Jobcentre. My wife got hers from the Jobcentre when she arrived in the UK.

As I said I do not specialise in immigration law but from my understanding of it you may be entitled to work under a business visa. I suggest you contact the helpline at the Home Office who can confirm whether you are entitled to work. Sometimes conditions are imposed on the visa in your passport

After speaking to my mum, this is my possition at the moment. Untill now we have had a business visa, but now we are getting upgraded to a LTR(leaveto remain) visa. This means that i become a UK citizen and am intitled to a UK passport one year after the upgrade is made.

Does this change anything?

If you have indefinite leave to remain then you can work and are liable to tax / ni ... so once you have ILR, contact the inland revnue to tell them that you are working !

That way you become a honest tax paying citizen instead of some black market scumbag
