I will shortly be looking to gain new work through contacting various companies which I believe would benefit from my services. These companies will be chosen based on certain crieteria and each mailing will be personalised. I'm still concerned about the Mail Preference Service though. Does that count if I'm contacting the company specifically, as opposed to a random mailing? I don't want to fall foul of any laws just for the sake of a little possible work.

Hi,

I'm quite sure as a new business you are aloud to contact potential clients to let them know who you are and the services you offer.

This is a daft law and in theory the answer is no if they have applied to not get letters/ calls of this type. The law is there to stop the mass mailers and sweatshop call centres bombing companies with lots of calls, so you sending out a few hundred to very targeted people in very specific companies is not going to be a problem even if you follow up with a call.

In simple terms people do not get offended if what you have to say is relevant to them and they have a need. If it is not relevant and you pester them they will get upset and now there is a specific law to deal with these issues.
