Do you have a mentor? - 23-01-2005, 05:38 PM

setting up in business etc is hard

moving up the career ladder is hard

most people have someone they admire and take the best bits from them and hone their own skills to develop themselves

up until 2 years ago it was my old CEO

he clearly showed getting the best results was through people and accountability. he has turned three companies/ divisions around and not through bully boy tactics or even carrots - just plain self preservation in that he know most people take pride in their work and want to succeed - reverse phsycology I don't know

now I don't really have anyone particular

I admire people who have made it work online such as Shawn over at digitalpoint

what about everyone else ?

Mentors are very important and can help you keep on track.

It is important that you keep in touch with them and give them honest feedback about your position in business and personal life (as the two are very much related)

Having an accessible Mentor is very important, and someone that you feel comfortable with.

I have in the past taken a few people on (when asked) and have helped steer them in the right direction. I believe I gained as much as they did, and the sense of achievement was great too.

I would like to thank my old boss who single handedly put me off working for any other company, and therefore driving me towards becoming self-employed!

Peter mentioned bully boy tactics in his initial thread - this is something that my old boss used on a regular basis, and it certainly didn't work.
I admire anyone that has achieved real happiness through their work - this is something that I constantly strive towards.
