Question finding staff - 27-08-2007, 04:34 PM

hi all,

can anyone tell me how to advertise for experiencd staff, i need to find a qualified motorcycle instructor asap. as i am turning away work cause i cant meet the demand. have tried payed advertising in relevant papers ect (waste of money) . and word of mouth through networking. one guy turned up sounded promising as he the qualifications & expertise that i need, however he phoned a couple of days later and said the only reason he came for an interview was to see what my company was offering ( hours, wages ect ) to use as a bargaining tool for his current employer (arrogant git...sorry) where and what am i doing wrong....could it be because i am a relatively new company (trading 1 year )or is it something i am doing wrong??? would welcome any advice that can help.....thanks

It is a fairly specialised area which you are looking at which I expect is the reason local newspapers aren't the way to go.

I think your best bet would be to contact motorcycle related groups to see if they have any recommendations or referrals. Possibly local rider groups, or even national organisations that would only be too happy to help their members with job opportunities.

Sorry to hear on that one guy... hate time wasters.

Cheers

David

Why not try calling in to local motorcycle dealers, they tend to keep an ear close to the community and may know of a couple of frustrated instructors.

Why not train your own. some one has to.

I think you can get someone with these auto reseller groups or any repair shop they always keep this data with them but I think you should select anyone who you personally know and give him a training.

Have you tried posting an ad on craig list? Or you could also try finding related forums and post an ad there

Just to state the obvious.... congratulations on having more work than you can handle!

I too would suggest going down the training route: find someone you trust who has the right attitude and then give them the skills. Attitude is something you can't teach, skills are.

thanks for all the replies they are most helpfull, in regards to training people to become instructors i was at one point training two people but that didn't work out quite as expected as one couldn't work at wekends as he had to look after his children when his wife went to work and the other person basically thought (as i knew him and his family) that he could train when he wanted he was really surprised when i took him aside and basically asked him to pull his socks up, this really upset his family and needless to say got rid of him pdq. I would never again personally train anyone i knew as they take the rip out of you...again thanks for the info and i will keep trying

I occasionly find www.gumtree.com helpful for finding staff. It is area specific and I don't think it is expensive (never directly advertised on it)
you'll probably have the same idiots with irrelevant skills applying but unless you give them your personal mobile number you should generally be left alone.

As an IT consultant we won't have any candidates on the database that migth be useful, but since my patch is your area I'll keep an eye out :-)
