Liability issue, can anyone advice please. -

Hi
I am new to this forum and would like to ask a liability question.
I am self employed in the IT business, located in the UK.
I recently visited a client at their home and while I was with them my clean shoes left some polish on their carpet. The marking was very light, but still quite obvious because they have a beige carpet and my shoes are black.
It would appear that they feel that they need to have the carpet cleaned by a professional, as yet have not said that they expect me to pay for the damage. I hadn`t inspected the carpet before I started work, but I did see the light scuffing marks afterwards.
My question is this; if they decide to proceed with paying a professional company and then give me the invoice is this acceptable? Am I liable for this kind of claim?
Many thanks
Mark
