Are there any businesses who prefer to use open source software?

One great product is Open office http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...s/1009574294/1 which is an alternative to Microsoft office.

Are there any other particular open source products which are popular in the business community?

As a software engineer I have always contributed and used open source software, it's fantastic, industries attempt at growing a software base from the bottom up. Beware though, support is often very limited, check out carefully what support is available, if any, before you put all your eggs in one free basket.

The best thing about open source software is that sometimes whole "communities" emerge to support it - take phpNuke and Mambo Open Source for example (both web based Content Management Systems), they have a massive following and lots of people willing to help newbies etc...

You could take a look at http://sourceforge.net/top/mostactive.php?type=week for a sample of what is out there. It can be a bit tecky but has some great open source projects.
