Overcoming Fear To Start A Business - 16-10-2007, 07:10 AM

Is it your dream to start a business? Do you dream of owning a successful business? You may even wish that your business can generate passive income for you, so that you can retire financially free.

But you stop there, you didn't make that leap of faith, a huge stone is in your heart holding you back. You have a sense of fear in you. The fear of failure, the fear of uncertainty keeps popping from your head whenever you want to venture out. You are worried about failures, survival, insecurity etc. It will never end unless you put a stop to the fear.

How do you get rid of this fear? To move forward towards your dream, getting rid of this fear is necessary.

First let us discuss about where does fear of failure comes from. This fear comes mainly from young when you are in school. What happen when you didn't do well in school? Do they call you a failure? Do they place you together with children who also don't do well? Do others laugh at you?

This whole concept of fear comes from a place called schools. , a place where learning should happen. Unfortunately, we learnt fear as well.

What does FEAR stands for? It stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. It is bad things you say to yourself even though it didn't happen. Your mind starts playing the movie of "What if..." What if I failed, what if I lost all my money, what if my love ones leave me.

They are not the truth; it's your mind that is playing trick on you. Your mind is deeply conditioned on not making mistakes or avoiding failures.

Starting a business takes some courage. It takes courage to overcome the fear in you. It takes courage to awaken your consciousness about this fear. Your mind will control you with this fear, immobilize you, and stop you from starting a business.

Firstly, identify that it's your FEAR. Understand clearly that it is your mind stopping you from becoming successful. It's just a conditioning from young; you won't feel hurt even if you make mistakes. Human being learns by making mistakes. Mistakes and failures are meant something when we put meaning into it. In reality, there are no failures, only feedback.

Next, realizing it is just your mind playing trick on you, say to it, "thank you for sharing, come back another day". Quickly take action, start your business, go for that investment. Taking action is the most effective way of removing fear. Taking action helps you gain exposure and experience. Experience makes you more competence, therefore removing your fear.

The next time FEAR sets in, identify it and take massive action. Start your business anyhow, soon you'll find yourself having less and less of fear.

Great post. I actually went through the whole starting a new small business about a year and a half ago. I was a decision that I went through over and over again in my head. I had to take into consideration my family and the money/ time impact it would have on them. I ended up taking the leap and have never looked back.

I have to say I have not overcome any fear.
I started selling my jewellery in a blind panic not knowing what the heck Im doing.I still havnt got a clue.

But I do have to say that its not my main source of income, if it were then I think I would definately be experiencing fear.

The best way to overcome fear when starting a new business is to firstly research all the products that you will be up against and then honestly compare them to what you have to offer to the market.

If you get that frisson of excitement at this point you will have probably got it right. However if you have the slightest doubt - keep looking.

This may or not be a great post (frankly I think it's a bit of mindless polemic) but either way, it's not original. As far as I can see it's a simple copy/past from just here.

Of course, the author might be the same person, but frankly I doubt it.

Sad and disingenuous, to say the least.

i didnt have any fear when starting my business as i had done all the researching that was needed in order that the business got off to a good start, i have found that its not the fear but the focus that you have to keep your eye on. once you start to lose focus on where you are going, you become lost and it can tke you forever to get back where you were or never at all.

Excellent post. There's lots of motivational articles on stevepavlina.com and zenhabits.com. They're not my websites, nor do I have anything to do with them - they're just bloody good personal development blogs

Overcoming fear for anything in life is difficult but its taking the action to do so that really counts. Starting a business can be a scary thought but then going from London to Manchester with no directions can be equally scary.

The key thing with anything you want to do in life and be successful at, is to continually educate yourself about your market and always put that education into practice, its no point learning something then not acting upon it you need a map,a plan, goals etc to follow.

'Fear' is in the mind nothing more, nothing less we create that fear by our thinking pattern, training your mind to think successfully and to overcome that fear can be the greatest feeling ever because once you do it you want to keep doing.

I say educate yourself, read the right information and never give up.

The fear comes from the lack of knowledge about starting a business.
You have to read many books, articles about your business idea or about
starting a business.
You must read the law, find out what documents you need to start the business, you must have financial, marketing, management knowledges.
You can's start a business without a previsions planing.
Plan ahead at least one year of your business (employees, marketing, partners, departments, etc.)
A Good plan overcomes the fear!

Well, you might also talk about ambiguities rather than fear upon starting a new business. Because so many questions would cross the mind when just wetting the feet for new business ventures.
