Not quite a telephone service, but I think this is worth a mention.

You may like to try a free web to fax service. There is a catch in not every area is available but there is a tool to look up what numbers are covered and what are not.

Full details are at http://www.tpc.int/

Its possible to send a fax via email, the format required is as follows:
remote-printer.name@44112212345612.iddd.tpc.int

(the number is the phone number starting with the international code is inserted after the '@' sign.

The UK has very good coverage....
