500 websites receiving most traffic

i have a ranked list of the 500 most popular sites on the web. i get free monthly updates.

how useful is this information, and what would you do with it?

That would be a good list if you want to opt for paid ad spots for a marketing campaign.

Not a very useful list unless it is categorized demographically, geographically and socially. It's more about knowing your target audience than knowing that google is the most popular site.

some categorising can be done programmatically based on domain extensions, ip resolution, scanning the markup for lang attributes, checking domain extensions of inlinking sites...etc

and the source codes can be scanned for keywords to generate theme categories...etc

Supposing I set up a site selling widgets. I look at your list and discover that widgets-r-us is number 27. How is this going to help me? Another popular site might be the Louisiana-gumbo-store. How is this going to help me sell fish cakes in Lancashire?

A list of site receiving the most traffic is just a list, I can't really see any use for it. What would you use it for?

BTW, the list must be based on estimates - the actual figures are a closely held secret.

The answer to that question is NO....

If anyone is looking for a list why not try Alexa.com if it is just a popularity list..and before anyone says I know it is only a total of alexa uses. But for a guide it can be useful. Comparing like with like within Alexa.

but my typo-squatting is more ethical. it's not the squatting that's unethical - it's the abuse of the squatting that's unethical, right?

Wood1e, I wouldn't rely that much on alexa as their stats are really not THAT accurate. But it can be a resource to consider.
