Above the line and Below the line?

I have recently heard the phrases "Above the line Marketing" and "Below the line Marketing" being used in relation to online marketing. I have a vague understanding of these terms, but would like to know if anyone could give me a good, easy to understand description of them.

What category would you say the presentations we make fall into?

I am assuming below the line.

Above the Line.
Advertising for which a payment is made and for which commission is paid to the advertising agency.

Below the Line.
Non-media advertising or promotion when no commission has been paid to the advertising agency. Includes direct mail, point of sale displays, giveaways.
