How much should I charge for advertising? - 10-07-2008, 05:57 PM

I have two fairly successful (in terms of traffic) local information websites.

I regularly get enquires about how much I charge for advertising, but as yet have never responded as I have just relied on Adsense.

The other issue is how to take payment as I am not running as a business, I would need payment by paypal or similar. Doesn't look very professional.

One of the people asking for rates is a huge multinational American based company!

the main site I refer to is http://www.altrinchamlife.co.uk

Any help would be appreciated.

James

P.S. This is the reason they want to advertise there

Month Unique Visits
January 1,365
February 1,319
March 1,458
April 1,334
May 1,422
June 1,736
July 514

Oh and the high Google ranking for Altrincham keywords

Hi James,

I guess it's up to you what to charge. At least what you are earning via Adsense. Perhaps triple that figure and quote it to the American company and see what they say. Your traffic is quite low so I suspect it may be to "buy a link" - so be careful (whether it's a real ad or not) - you should think about adding "rel=nofollow" to the link as well

Peter - the traffic is quite low compared to bbc.co.uk! but this is a very small audience my site is aimed at. The American company is sun-rise residential homes who are building a new home nearby, they are definately looking for an advert rather than a link.

The traffic is not the reason they approached me, the SERPs is.

I will go and review the Adsense earnings, but they are not very high (not a high CPC)

thanks for the reply and the nofollow tip.

James

If the traffic isnīt the reason why theyīre interested in advertising on your site, your traffic levels arenīt especially relevant. They might be looking at your PageRank (which, in my opinion, is a mistake, but itīs common practice for links buyers). Also, if you add the nofollow tag the links will be worth for your advertisers.
