Hi

I have signed up to some free webhosting, as I want to practice using some shopping cart software, but I now want to install it but i first need a database

I logged on to the cpanel X admin area, then go to Mysql database, went to create one, gave it a name, etc, then it says that created a database with the name, then I go back and the database is not there, its basically looks like its doing nothing, does not show any databases I have created.

Anyone know what the probem may be ?

Thanks

nizmo

Hello nizmo

Cpanel is not the easiest of tools. It is likely that you have created a database. It will be an empty one i.e., one with no tables and no data. Your next step is to create a table or tables.
You can do that by running a (Eg) PHP script against the database. Then you can populate the table(s) with data.
Your CPanel admin home page (the one you get on admin login) should have a shortcuts tab. Click on that to go to the MySQL admin tool. You should check whether you are allowed to use db admin software - if yes, the PHPMyadmin is free (open source) and relatively easy to use for creating tables, inserting data,etc..

It is important to understand that MySQL is a database server - your db will be one of many sharing the MySQL space. So you are restricted as to what your host allows you to see.
Hope this helps. You can PM me if you want more info
regards
Patrick

generally you set you db up first and cpanel will give you a db name like yoursite_databasename

then create a user and your username will be yoursite_yourusername and you need to assign the user to your new database

then again generall you should edit a config.php file with your shopping cart s/w where you tell it the empty db you have just set up.

It should then create all the tables for you and away you go !

Hi Nizmo,

Maybe you could approach it from a different direction by installing a more user friendly application such as Wordpress? That's easy peasy to set up!

Hi,

it's blogging software that runs under php with a MYSQL database.

http://wordpress.org/

I'm experimenting with it myself
http://www.travel-niche.com/blog/
and it was ever so easy to set up.

If you get stuck I have a dormant account you can use for a few weeks. I'm too busy to use it now, but I would ask that we set up a password on the account to prevent it being spidered by the search engines. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Cheers,
Ender.

Hi there.

Glad to hear all is going well now.

But just for interest what shopping cart are you trying out, and how's it going?

We have our own CMS purpose build for our specific use of displaying and selling photos, but I have been looking around at various shopping carts, and CMS sites and most of them seem to be terribley hard to use.

I'm one of those people, that can usally open a program and work out how to use it within a couple of hours, and theres always a grumble when I have to use helpfiles, the whole office is in an uproar, if anyone notices I actually reading a helpfile I have yet to find any help in one after five years. So not being about to use these shopping cart and CMS programmes is a new thing for me, I guess I'm so used to the easy of use for our own one, that I've been spoilt lol

Shopping carts vary a lot - but the basics are not difficult. Have a look at one I've built as a demo (not complete yet) where I intend to provide an explanation and guide for small businesses to maintain their own site.
