Hi Anne, your post was very helpful as I'm about the enter the fray with Protx and an OSCommerce cart, I'm desperately trying to get away from PayPal who are currently fleecing my little business an average £70/month from my gross. May not seem much to some but to me it's a big chunk!

I'm looking to join the Federation of Small businesses in the hope they can help sort me out with a decent business bank account and merchant account, as choosing which one I feel is going to be a nightmare, I can't find any websites that compare the rates and percentage per transaction

I'm swotting up on Google checkout too but don't you need a merchant account to use it? I'd like to offer a number of payment options but ultimately I just want something that doesn't fleece you as much as PayPal!

Google checkout is very similar to Paypal.

Worldpay hang onto your cash too long (6 weeks on average).

Protx is very good - I have a lot of clients that use them.

Nochex is a UK competitor to Paypal and worth a look.

Mooneybookers - never used them and I don't know anyone who has.

eGold - smells like a scam site (sorry eGold!)

Sitepoint has a calculator for fees http://www.sitepoint.com/examples/me...calculator.php it's USA biased but a good example of Merchant account Vs Paypal fees etc

That's a good calculator at sitepoint. I would say that Worldpay doesn't have any fixed monthly fees though so you could discount that cost.
