Relevant Link Exchanges

Hi,

I've had a look through a number of posts and was surprised to see that many people believe that exchanging links with other websites can do more harm than good. Is this still the case with relevant link exchanges?

Thanks

Yes.

Link exchanges will hurt your ranking. Read Matt Cutts blog to find out why.

PS: If you don't konw who Matt Cutts is then you haven't been doing your SEO research!

It depends a little bit on the circumstances - there isn't a blanket 'rule'. If you can get a link from a PR7 site with millions of visitors and great original content related to your own site, and the only way to do it is to reciprocate a link then go for it. If you're just picking similar companies, with similar offerings and sticking them on a generic 'links' page, then it at best you'll get no benefit - and at worst you'll be penalised for trying to trick the search engines.

So link with care!

Hi Tim,

If you're referring to us then it could well have been - we were on LBC 97.3 FM radio a few weeks ago, interviewed in the morning at around 8.30am. Hope we came across well!

I gotta agree with fisicx. Link exchanges are old news. You want non-reciprocal links from high PR sites if possible.
