Angry Restricted website access
21-11-2007, 10:39 AM

Hi,

Just wondering what people know about restricted website access. We're looking at some of our competitors and have come across duchyhydraulics.co.uk which says you have to log in to view the site.

But can't find any pages where someone could log in. The site doesn't appear to be indexed in google.

Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this - is there a sub-site somewhere? If so how would I find it?

How does restricted access work?

Thanks

Restricted access could work any way they wanted it to work. Site is probably not on Google as Google has also not been permitted access. It could be that as a further security measure they also hide the logon screen - makes it harder for people to try to guess at passwords.

I suspect the site is intended for employees / registered customers only. So probably not much general content. Why are you so desperate to look at this competitor (and they are equally desperate for you not to look!!!)?

It could be that the site is intended as an intranet site but is available over the internet so that remote employees can access it.

Huge rivalry between the companies, and some unethical practices going on, on their part.

I was just trying to work out what they're doing on their website...we've just launched 2 new sites and was interested to see what they were up to.

There are a number of reasons for doing what they have done - the 1st reason I can think of (off the top of my head) is that they do not actually have a website at all and they are just using the domain for email etc - rather than put up a holding page or having a 3rd party holding page they have just turned off directory indexing on the site root - this would give the permission error.
