Hi everyone,
Could anyone tell me what is the SEO and and other things related to it iam sorry but iam little new to such things..If I have a website so how I can promote it to Top Rank??

There is no easy answer. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is just one part of Search Engine Marketing which is part of Marketing.

This is an excellent beginners guide. Allow yourself a couple of hours to read and digest.

Search engine optimization is everything that can be done to make a search engine send more traffic to a web site.
Usually this means defining keywords or key phrases and trying to have your web site listed first (or at least near first) for those key terms.
Search engine optimization is usually divided into two categories of tasks:
• On-page optimization
• Off-page optimization
On-page optimization is designing your web pages to achieve the best ratings from the search engines.
On-page optimization activites include:
• Writing keyword-rich text
• Applying good ALT tags to images
• Making sure that the web page can be properly "spidered" by all of the search engines
• Off-page optimization consists of creating inbound links to your web page.

Interesting article (the first one). You mention the use of the metatags to help with SEO. According to google the description metatag is not used when ranking the page, it is however used to construct the snippet. In any case, the snippet description you show on your blog is different to your actual metatag!

It's also good practive to write unique page titles and descriptions rather than use the DB to generate them for you. If all you do is lift the text from the opening paragraph then you are missing the opportunity to fully describe the whole page.

There is also some difference of opinion regarding the inclusion of the business name in the page title. The argument against is that somebody searching isn't interested in you, only what you offer. The business name appears in the URL and (usually) the description so why waste valuable characters in the page title repeating this information.

And you miss the most important SEO element of all from your list. You need to build an informative and interesting site that adds value and people will want to visit. There is no point in being at #1 if your visitors take one look at the site and leave. Get the bounce rate below 50% and then work on your SEO.

Hi EWD, on the last line of the Meta Tag description I say:

"Meta tags don't significantly influence your page rankings but still play a part with search engines such as Yahoo."

Also

"A well written description can entice people to click through to your site and an opportunity to tell people why they should visit your page."

Like you say, simply taking the first para from the page doesn't always tell the full story. You're right about the snippet on the page, thanks for that I'll update it.

Regarding the business name in the page title, I feel it's more of a visual link between what the page is about and the company. Without the name you miss an opportunity to forge that link.

Your page content should be your primary goal, if someone is just trying to rank at #1 without taking into consideration the user experience then as you say users will simply click back to the search engine results page.
