fisicx, i am agreeing with you..

SEO in NOT about links, links, links

it would be interesting to see two sites, made at the same time - with the aim in mind of ranking in google.

with an uncompetitive keyphrase that isnt searched much (to avoid any interferring competiton)

both with domain names not relevant to search phrase.

the first site

would be a html page of graphics. any text etc in the graphics. doesnt matter what graphics or what it looks like etc

the second site
would be a html text site, written to be informative to the search engines and to the end user.

the first site would rely on links to raise it in the search engines.

the second site would attempt to raise above with no links - just reply on content to make it relevant so google would throw it up.

i would gamble that the site with no links- but good content would come above the one with no content - but links.

and as this is something that can be proved, maybe we should throw down the gauntlett.....

links are important, but they are not everything.

In fact, onpage SEO is important, and I think you can rank good for keyword phrases, that have few competition. But there's the limit. At least concerning google, where most of free SE traffic comes from. For google the incoming links are more relevant, so much that even sites with NO relevant keywords on it can rank #1. I have seen it with a big movie site.
So according to this i have read also the phrase "Backlink is king"

Another thing, concerning 1 million other sites linking back with the same anchor text - google has learned again shortly...they are knocking sites out of the top 1000 for certain keywords. This has happened to some well known SEO experts shortly. So, caution!
