steps to starting a online business
19-12-2005, 02:13 AM

Hello all,

I am trying to get an idea off the ground. It would be an online business where I would be prompting another businesses products. So by people coming to my site the other party could make a potential sale. I would thus make money off the actual sales and maybe even number of clicks on their links.

Do I need to patent this type of site? Its not an invention or anything new.

What are the steps I would need to take in order to get something like this started?

I appreciate all your help, thx.

No you don't need a patent for this kind of website, this technology already exists and a site can actually be setup do this very easily... What you are doing is basically becoming an affiliate for other companies, do a Google search for affiliate schemes and you will see that there are lots of affiliate schemes available offering you the chance to make some money by sending sales to other companies.

The problem you will face is how to get visitors to your website so that they "click through" to the merchant to make a purchase, really big site's like kelkoo.com etc do this because they offer a price comparison so that you can get the best deal (of those listed) but if you are just going to be a store front for various other shops then I think you will need a good "angle" to make this work.

Hi,

If you would like some advice on creating an affiliate site like this please contact us.

You have to think why somebody would be willing to use your website to look at the products than the direct website e.g. if you were an Amazon affiliate why would i look at their products on your site rather than Amazon direct?

Kind Regards

Thank you all for your replys.

I believe I have a great angle for this site. I don't have the skills myself to build the quality site I'm looking for so i would definitely have someone else build it for me.

I also want to have my site as a link on say, MTV.com and a few other sites. What would be the steps for doing something like that?

I image I would get paid on the number of time the affiliates site is clicked or when something is purchased from there site and they were directed by my link/site.

Am I on the right track? How involved does this sound? Any advise is appreciated,

Thank you.

I would imagine that you would have to remortgage your house to afford good size ad's on MTV.com

As for the way the affiliate system works - you are spot on... There are already affiliate systems setup accross the net. You simply signup (for free) and then browse the list of advertisers, find the ads you like and copy 'n paste the code for it into your website... As simple as that!
All visitors to your site will record a "hit" on the banners displayed, any click throughs will be recorded and any sales from these visitors to the merchants site(s) will be credit to your account at the advertised rate... Some pay per lead (loan firms etc) whilst most pay a % commission.
A good example to have a look around is www.affiliatewindow.com

Thats how I've started off. I'm an affiliate and make money by promoting the product. I earn commission on each sale. I carry no stock.

It does work and is a simple way to start up in business
