I'll have to admit here that I don't often stumble into this particular forum on the Teneric site, but now that I am here ......

as a relative beginner with a website, with little free time, is there an easy way to get my site listed on all these sites you have mentioned? Is there a company who will list them for me and maintain the links, or is it simply a DIY process? Maybe as my site is purely a reference site and shop window, and not a selling site I shouldn't bother??

If you hope to attract people to your site via search engines you should try and build up as many inbound links as possible and directories are amongst the easiest but I would warn you that your site isn't very "search engine friendly" and would need some work done on it if you wanted to get decent page positions from search results.

Google has indexed the site and if you look at Google's cache it is just a blank page as that is all that the spider sees.

Ian, thanks for the heads up. But what exactly is Google's cache and how do I view it?

What remedial action would you suggest to correct whatever problem is occuring?

The cache is what Google has stored in it's index about your site. If you click
here you will see what Google has stored about my site starting with the site title and description. Underneath are various heading including a link to the cache where you will see how Google views my site.

Now click on this link and you will see the same thing for your site. The title is shown as PJ Facilities but there is no description as you don't have one in your website coding which is a shame as Google places great store on the "description"

Click on the "Show Google's cache of www.pjfacilities.co.uk/ " link and you will come up with a blank page. Whilst I know a bit about search engine optimisation I know next to nothing about website coding but I think that your problem is that the domain name is pointing to a website that is hosted elsewhere and Google's spider can't see the text.

Perhaps one of our many IT experts will give you chapter and verse on the exact nature of the problem and the easiest way of curing it.

You could add our DIY PR portal to your list. You can post articles, press reeases, classified ads and business links. This will help to increase your 'digital footprint' on the Web.
