Talking presenters on websites

Hi,

These things seem to be getting more and more popular. Does anyone use them? Do they work?

KWIKVID . COM make them in the UK, I think there are other companies aswell, has anybody heard of them? If so, do you recommend them? If not, who else does them?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You are more likely to lose potential customers than gain new business. If your site is well designed with a usable and accessbile layout and good quality content you don't need any of these gimmicks.

Personally, I find them annoying as hell! However, there is an increasing move towards websites believing they are 'channels', just like on TV. Maybe the only website presenters I have seen simply have been implemented terribly and the idea really does have mileage, if done well

I think you make a good point.

Are websites of the future going to be channels? ie: is there a move towards convergence?

As soon as you put video on a website does this turn it onto online TV?

Are you saying we shouldn't put any video on websites?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Nothing wrong with video on a website but I choose to play or not. Anything that plays automatically when a page loads is generally regarded as a bad move. I was on a site the other day that had a flash advert with sound, it was so intrusive that I left the site - a potential sale lost forever.

I agree completely, noisy sound, video clips playing and the presenter thing generally mean I'll close the window and look elsewhere.

It seems to me these kind of things tend to be used mostly on websites where the site istelf is poor with usefull content lacking.

I like to read information on a site, quickly, without too much waffle.

I also noticed 'Andy' had just joined the brand republic site and asked much the same question, in exactly the same format, what are the odds?

Has anyone seen these video presenters which you can put onto web pages?
Do they work? Are they are a way of reducing bounce? Or are they just annoying?
I'm looking at ways of making a clients site more appealing using digital media.

Interested in your thoughts.
Cheers,
and also 'Rob' on ukwebmasterworld,

I don't like them either; can't understand why people include them.. particularly not when they play automatically.

Apart from anything else, most people don't bother making them in formats that play with anything other than the new-software-not-releast-until-next-month...

i always thought they were a little dated.

I have been on lots of websites that have them and i usually just turn the sound off as soon as i hear them start.
