Many small companies running a web businesses from home have a fear of placing names, addresses or phone numbers on their website as they want to seem BIG.
Remember, if you want someone to purchase online one of the largest hurdles is trust. Time and time again I come across websites with no contact details..sorry I ain't putting my credit card details in there.
Put your contact details up there big and strong like your proud of them, your customers will love you for it.
(If you don't want to put up your own home details there are plenty of virtual services out there - cough).

It's cut down the amount of spam enormously. I also only accept emails addressed to info@ or ian@ as everything else goes into the mail server black hole
Good tip
There is also a software that they enter their question into and it sends the question to you without revealing your email. But cannot remember what that is called
Yes you are quite right about trust, if a firm has a website that I use has no telephone number or contact details I wont buy either, but lots of sites have no contact details, it's like letting a person in the street see your visa card.
Mind you lots of people who sell on line are scared of a little man with a black suit, and leather case in hand, yep seems it may not be a bad idea for some to hide.

I heard that having your contact details easily available helps with your SEO credibility, as well as having a link next to your contact form that points to your privacy policy statement. Apparently google likes this.
To get around the problem of spam, you could use an enquiry form, that uses a server technology such as PHP or ASP, to gather the users data and email it to you. This would ensure that your email address is not displayed within the HTML of your web page, there are plenty of tutorials available on how to do this.
Alternatively display your email address using an image.
I think much more important than a contact detail on your website, even though it mos def helps, is the contact details of the merchant on a very visible place in the checkout page. Cos remember the owner of the site usually has nothing to do with collecting payments. Sadly, most shoppers are not aware of this, so perhaps, a contact detail on sites can be useful.
Fighting with spam is a big issue however there are many ways to handle it. Has anyone tried using Google Applications to implement their email? It really stops all the spam even before it reaches in your inbox.
