The tone of offering website advice
15-03-2008, 11:56 AM
  #1

I have to be honest in saying that it comes across very strongly that many people on this forum are offering advice on new websites that is put in a 'less than positive concept'.

Iv'e only been a member for 3 weeks, but can quickly see a pattern where new websites are criticised in order to 'PM' the poor person seeking advice like crazy to be able to 'offer the solution' to their problems.

In fact, the reality seems to be that 80% of the comments are geared towards this - and I'm not the only person to notice.

Come on those of you that offer advice! Try and make it positive. You know, we have all been there and people are on a different journey. Honesty is a good thing, but selling your services in this way isn't...

I'm sure this will be strongly criticised, but more because people are very good at tricking themselves into thinking that their motivations are more honorable. That's just human nature..

I wouldn't care, but some of those offering quite severe criticism haven't got websites that are anything over average themselves!

Keep up the good work!

Paul.

I agree but many of the people asking for a review are only really interested in the link drop (which doesn't work since the forum has a no follow tag).

If the poster gives the background to the site and asks for specfic help then you will see more postive replies. And I may be one of those who is a bit heavy handed but that's because I get a little annoyed at those who have obviously done no research be fore launching their website on the public.

Hi Fisix,

Ok, I appreciate your point and you are quite right about the 'link dropping' in some cases. There is the other side of people responding negatively to sell their services to the person also - which I don't necessarily disagree with - but feel it should be done with an ethos of support and encouragement.

For many of these people, thats all they are looking for - constructive criticism.

Anyway, this forum is still a great place to come for peer to peer support and advice; just a little disappointing what some people will try and do to make a buck at times; but I suppose that's human nature...

Keep up the good work, and let's all try to help each other.

Paul.

That is why I try and refrain from posting in the website reviews section

I have never had a single lead from this forum - and that is the way I like it... I do get the odd PM asking for advice, and I once built a website for a woman for free because she was turned over by other people / systems but that is as far as it goes.

There are 3 types of "website review" user:

1. Mr "link drop and doesn't come back" - approx 60%

2. Mr "link drop, comes back but doesn't like the advice so strops" - 30%

3. Mr "takes the advice and is very happy" - 10%

Ok, so I must be in the 10% because I took the advice.
