a big, big question

if you're trying to get free traffic from the search engines and want to get up the list you're going to need links from other sites into yours

and that's about it!!

Ensure your anchor text (the text in the link itself) has your keywords you are targeting and mix them up - ie: don't have all your links with the same text

If you have your text on your pages correct then this is all you need to do...

An easy way to get good one way links to your site is to submit to online directorys.

I perfer to do this manually but there are some auto submit services available.

Google and the other search engines look at some of the meta tags as part of their excercise to decide on whether the page is relevant to the search enquiry,

Meta tags that are just lists of keywords aren't used much nowadays but the meta title and meta description still play a vital role and should be carefully optimised if you want to do well on a search engine.

I have a website. The site is about 9 months old and has a database of cheap UK and foreign property. The one thing I would advise is patience as far as Google is concerned. 44% of search enquiries come through Google. You don't mention how old your site is. However Google put all new sites into a 'Sandbox'. This means you don't really achieve any good rankings with Google and with any other search engine that takes its rankings from Google until Google release you from the sandbox. This can take up to 9 months. We have just been released as our rankings are stable and some phrases see us at Page 1, Ranking 1. In the meantime don't take short cuts and use the time to talk to as many people as poss about your site.

Some ways of getting free web traffic

Hello,

Some things you could do.
With your current traffic, you could get your visitors to tell your friends about you by adding a tell a friend button to your site. Sites like 1-hit.com offer this service for free.

Encourage your site visitors to come back by including resourcefull contant on your site like, If you sell clothing, include a size converter that shows how the clothing sizes compare to measurement systems used in different countries.

Give away free content like free articles, product reviews or advice columns. You'll find webmasters willing to include them on theirs sites.
This would have a resource bosx at the end that includes some background information on you and a link to your site.

Thanks for that. We actually have just put the 'tell a friend' on our site and thats working really well. Something like 80 referrals in a week. WE also give away a months free membership which gives free access to restricted areas in exchange for three referrals (which are automatically validated). This is working well. Thanks again.
