Could someone teach me what you mean by "linking"? And how you know if another site gets "crawled by spiders". (That creates an aweful image in my head
)My site is being designed right now...and, I need to understand this stuff. Hallie <---complete newby in the area of site ranking ![]() |

Hi Hallie,
A link is (normally) the words or phrase on a webpage that are in blue and underlined - if you click on that you go to another page on the website. Sometimes if you click you'll be taken to another website. This link to another website is like the first site casting a vote for the other site (ie: site 2 is of interest) The larger sites like microsoft have thousands of these links from thousands of other websites - that makes it popular for users and for search engines. When a search engine decides where to rank you it will take these votes or links into consideration. These days it's a big part of the decision. So, you'll need sites linking into your new site. But ! : a) new links won't become effective in google for one to two months - loads of people are talking about a "sandbox" - the links will be found but not counted for your site b) if you run a fashion site your links from (say) a gaming site won't count as much as if a link was from a fashion related site c) the text in the link is important - try to get your keywords into the link - for example business plan is the text I want to be found under - this is what people are searching for Hope that helps regards Peter |

Thank you Peter. I know what a link is...lol.
Just didn't quite understand how the have any part in site ranking. NOW I understand. It sounds like, once I add my website URL to the places I already have my business listed, that I will be doing exactly what you are talking about. Awesome ![]() Hallie |

yep - links are the biggest factor in moving up the search engine rankings at the moment. Make sure you have you keyword text in the link though - if you think for (say) your company name and it has nothing to do with what you want to be found under it will not help as much.
Glad we did the link tutorial ![]() |
