Your first 'error' was to annonunce yourself and your services as professional.

Professional graphic designers don't charge 'little to nothing' as they have developed a healthy interest in eating on a regular basis and having a roof over their heads.

You might like to try a different 'pitch'... Announce instead that you are a designer who is starting out, wants to build a good portfolio and that you'd be interested to take on low or no cost work for charities etc. This may get a better response.
