Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking into starting up a new business doing computer maintenance, repairs, servicing and upgrades. I've been doing lots of freebies for people for quite a while, and am also working as a Postie. The post office is my main job, but i'd like to be able to make a business that would earn enough to leave my current job as a postie so i can work self-employed full time.

I'm really new to all of this and would appreciate some pointers regarding Tax, and registering with Companies House as a sole trader, basically all the start-up and business related stuff.

If anyone can help with a few pointers, please email me on brian@cybitech.com (this is an email address i've set-up temporarily).

As a sole trader, you won't need to register anything with Companies House. However, you will need to let your tax office know you are starting self-employment and keep accurate records of expenditure and income. Notifying the Inland Revenue must be done within three months of starting up (Or is it from the first payment from a client? - Verification needed here.) Also, check what your NI liabilities are with the IR.

Speaking to an accountant would be a good thing to do before you start as you'll need to have one anyway unless you are planning to submit your tax returns yourself (not a good idea if you're not totally sure of what you're doing)
