Hi

I've been running my small online business since Feb 05. Dreading filing the next tax return now as it's my first full year!

I still have a full time job so juggling both until my own business can bring enough money in the household!

Glad to have found this forum as sharing experience with others is so valuable!

Hi Just.b and welcome to the forum. Loads of helpful people on here and obviously I can help you with your tax return if necessary.

Regards

Thanks Joy

I have put most of my figures on excel so hopefully I can work out where to put them in the tax return. However I've always wondered how much a bookkeeper would cost, and what do they do, record invoices / purchases?

When an accountant says they can help with tax return, what kind of information do they require? For instance, my records are probably not very accurate. Do they take time to check the whole thing? I thought this would cost quite a lot!

I sell jewellery making accessories - sorry for not advertising myself too much but as I still have a full time job, I don't feel confident in putting myself out too much in forums. My boss would quickly understand why I have been so forgetful, making mistakes every 5 minutes, and not focussed over the last year! You never know who reads...

Bookkeepers charge from £8 per hour out in the sticks to £30+ per hour in London. I charge £25 per hour for bookkeeping. A good bookkeeper should be able to draw up your books, reconcile all your control accounts, do your VAT returns and produce a trial balance ready to hand over to an accountant.

Regarding what info accountants want, I always send out a questionnaire for the required info. If you PM me your e-mail address I’ll e-mail you my questionnaire. If an accountant is going to put his signature to something he’s going to want to ensure that it’s correct. Chances are they will check things. If your records are good it will pay dividends. If they’re not you’ll get charged, firstly because of the time taken to put them right and secondly ‘cos you’ll have p*ssed him off.

Regards

Joy
