Redundant Web Designer Gone Freelance
14-05-2004, 01:39 AM
  #1

Hello all,

Im a web developer/designer, ive been working in the industry for 6 years. Recently I was made redundant from my previous job of 5 years with a small local isp.

Now i've decided to start up on my own. Ive bought the domain www.prowebdesign.co.uk, which i thought would have been taken already.
had my cards printed. Registered with tax office etc etc.

I have even completed my first project (www.finfuncom.com), which is due to be put live tomorrow. I have a final meeting with the client during which im going to present the invoice. Now the problem I have is im totally confused with a few things.
Im not VAT registered, so I dont charge and VAT or show it on any invoices??
So would my typical invoice look like so??

------------------------------------------------------------
ProWebDesign Contact details etc
------------------------------------------------------------
Description Cost
Full web site design and implementation £xxxx
domainname.com £xx
Hosting £xxx
---------------------------------------------------------------
Subtotal £xxxx
Total £xxxx

I didn't realise I didnt know how to write it until I opened excel and went to create it!

Any help would be fantastic.
Cheers

Hi Aaron

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

For your query, you have listed the items correctly that you need to have on your invoice.

You only need to register and charge VAT when your sales are over £58,000

On your invoice you do not need to mention VAT numbers or charge VAT -

This sometimes means you can undercut the larger companies by 17.5% because if the client you are doing the work for is not VAT registered they will not be able to claim the VAT back - so if you don't charge it, your job is 17.5% less.

If you're not registered for VAT you don't have to charge for VAT - simple as that !
