Can I take action against the Bank?

My Husband was jointly/severally liable for a guarantee with a well known high street bank in respect of a business he was a director of. He left the
business several years ago through differences.
Since that time he has endeavoured (and this is not denied by the bank) to seek release from this guarantee. Each and every letter remained unanswered by the bank. He was given verbal assurances that the matter had been dealt with, although he was unable to elicit written confirmation.
A letter of complaint was directed to their Head Office and this resulted in a meeting with the Business Manager who was less than truthful. He acknowledged the letters and advised that the request for the release of my husband from the guarantee had been put to the risk team and declined. This was done two years after my Husband's original written request. Empty promises followed about going back to the risk team for the request to be back-dated to the original request date.
To cut a long story short - the business failed and my Husband received a Demand for what he had jointly/severally guaranteed. It transpired that although the Bank were aware of my Husband's wish to be released from the original guarantee that they allowed the remaining Director to increase the borrowing (albeit him being sole guarantor of the increased amount) but keeping my Husband's guarantee in place.
We have had to engage a solicitor to resolve this matter - which has taken some eight months and incurred fees of £2,000.00. I am very bitter about not only this but with the way my Husband has been treated by this Bank and the mental anquish this has caused.
Is there any action I can take against this Bank?

Unhappy Bunny
