I certainly commend you for your attitude in looking to help others on debt situations.

However, I would be mindful though that you may need to be licenced with the OFT in order to offer debt counselling and unless you are fully conversant with the law, your liabilities etc, you might actually find yourself liable if you were found to provide inaccurate or bad advice which then caused a person a financial loss.
As you have already been seriously mis-informed by a "friend" I would give a lot of thought about how you proceed with this. There may be a lot of expensive legality to deal with.
