need some advice

I have a hobby that has basically turned into something bigger. I sew handbags and sales have increased to the point of needing to become legal.
Problem is...I don't know what to do. People tell me to check with my State but I'm not even sure what to ask! I don't want this to become a huge hassle and expense but I love sewing and selling these bags and just simply want to become "legal". I am the kind of person that you really have to be specific with your answers so please.... Be specific and spell everything out. Thank you in advance!
