registration of a lease -

can anyone tell me if it is necessary to register a lease which I took over in 2004 and which was due to expire in 2012. I know the law changed in 2004 but as the lease was already in existence would it have to be registered? At the time of purchase the lease was extended by another 10 years ( making the total 18 years) but apparently this part does not have to be registered until it comes into force after 2012 ,when the original expires. Is that correct? thanks
