Advice on marketing a book

I'm a first-time book publisher which I have done in my spare time. I have had professional help with the cover, design and layout of the book but now I need to actually sell it.

Has anybody had any similar experiences? I want to see my book in newsagents, student shop, libraries and so on, but I have been told that the big boys (WH Smith, GT News, etc) don't talk to people like myself.

I can't really afford to spend any more money on the project so will be looking to do it myself.

Any advice/guidance appreciated.

Forgive me if you've already done this but I had a quick look on Google by putting "self publication book publishing" in the search bar. A number of interesting sites came up including the following:

These are only two of almost 1.4 million hits that came up so there's a wealth of information out there.

Since posting this message I've been in contact with someone in this field and havd had loads of really good information, so hopefully will be on my way by this time next week.

I work for The Book Service a book distribution company,we are part of the Ramdon House Group of Publishers (John Grisham,Dan Brown etc etc).I see you already have been given good advice,but if you wish, and you can give me more details,I am happy to see if anyone I have contact with can give more advice or help(I could ask what the process is for distributing for an indepent publisher like yourself)
Ps we deal with WHS/Ottakers/Waterstones/Amazon etc etc
Cant promise any miracles!but if you wish we sure can at least try.
