Hi Tara,

Whilst I'm all in favour of free stuff I'm also aware of the changing trends in internet usage.

The plethora of directories has watered down their effect. The major search engines for example have already noted in various blogs, forums etc that they can offer better directory services than the directories and so don't even rank them anymore.

Why then do you believe that LondonBased will succede where so many others have failed? One assumes you have carried out some market research to 'test the water'...

I also had a look at moodia. Not my cup of tea admitedly but there are some nice ideas there. I was however a little concered about your web design portfolio - one of the featured sites had over 200 validation warnings.

Anyway, good luck with your venture - pity you have restricted it to London, there are loads of businesses just on periphery who supply the city but can't get listed with you.... Just a thought.

Graham

Thanks for your comments and feedback Graham. We do realise that there will be businesses on the periphery who are able to service London. As you'll realise there are companies all over the world who can offer products and services to London. However, for now we are focused on creating a niche directory of 'London Based', (as in physically based in London) companies.
We're not charging for this service, and we don't have any stipulations for inclusion (apart from having to be based in London). We feel this sets us apart from hundreds of other directories that either charge or at least require a link back. We're not saying that this directory is going to set the world on fire, but hopefully it will become a useful resource.

Ah, but to become a useful resource you have got to become noticed.

And it is notoriously difficult to get a directory noticed.

Ask yourself this question (it appeared on a blog a while back) how do you find out things?

The answer is usually: via a search engine.

Only vary rarely does somebody suggest using a directory. And this is why directories fail, not because they aren't any good it's just that the search engines can do a better job.

The other problem is that all the listings are the same. If was searching for an architect I would like to see a bit more information about the company before I clicked on the link - something like this.

Graham

PS: the site does look nice however.
