I have to prepare a marketing strategy for a company that has 10 petrol stations around the country, all of them have restaurants and small retail shops.
Do you have any Idea, proposal.
What makes a good petrol station for you as a customer etc?
In my small town there are four petrol stations but out of these only one offers payment by credit/debit card at the pump. This is the one I favour because like most people when I pull into it the first thing on my mind is to fill the car up and pay for it as quickly as possible. I have no doubt though that its popularity in this respect means that there is correspondingly less traffic into the premises themselves; which is presumably where the retail operations are also to be found.
However if there is a). Plenty of parking space to occupy once the petrol has been purchased, b). That these are clearly and convieniently located and marked out for the purpose and c). The clear display of any promotions, giving good reason as to why one should park up and visit the store would greatly enhance the prospects of better and perhaps more committed retail traffic; thus turning a negative into a positive.
This all sounds obvious I know but very few petrol stations seem to have grasped these points. Further the one locally that offers payment at the pump does not promote either the fact or the perceived benefits this offers to the motorist in such a way that it can be seen from the road. If you don't get the motorist to the pump in the first place you are not going to get the message across about the store.
