yeh - or simply download the alexa toolbar and keep visiting your site!

It is only really known in the US, so if you get US visitors then you'll get good alexa rankings

The trouble with that is that people tend to forget that they are being tracked and it is human nature to check up on competitors' sites and every time you do that you give them a boost.

I must say that we find Alexa a good tool despite its many limitations. Yes, it only has about 10 million users but those users are not afraid of someone knowing about the sites they visit. This profile mainly fits employees working for companies of certain size i-e similar to our target market in UK. One of the information the alexa provides is the average page views per user. We compare it with our own webstats on a monthly basis to understand the page views of non Alexa users.

We also noticed that our rankings changed in line with changes in our traffic patterns to a large extent. I suspect this is mainly due to our B2B business model. I am not sure it will necessarily work for a B2C business.

We have also ensured that no one within the company got the Alexa toolbar installed to prevent distortions of data. Asking the question on this forum and doing a bit of research ourselves allowed us design a simple system to get additional information about visitors to our website and to get some useful information on our competitors .

At the end of the day, it has given us another free tool to measure our relative success on the internet.

Regards,

Joel
