I find blogging for SEO benefits a bit of a losing battle, I find that my own company site brings traffic to the blog, not the blog bringing traffic to my company site!

I suggest you to have a Link Builder ( coughs* ) . Try hiring someone there are good agents who could help you with this, it would help promote your site to different individuals and create more traffic and hits. You also need to have good and simple keywords that optimizes some search engines ( well it's still link building anyway o.O ) . Also, you need to make your site/blog visitor friendly, try making it interesting, not like repeating your said site over and over again like a broken record.

Agree. Blogging is really helpful for your site. If you have a blog related to your site, you can build quality links by providing a link on your blog using your targeted keyword as your anchor text. It also help to bring traffic to your site. Just provide quality and interesting content on your blog to make your site worth visiting...

Blogs can be useful, the problem is that there are so many, unless your stands out from the crowd with good content it won't get noticed.
