Generic Domains - 11-10-2007, 03:21 PM

Hi

Just bought the seo optimization videos of here and im very happy with it, liots to get started on. I just wanted to know, how imortant are generic domains, is it worth buying domains for all the key phrases you want to target if they are available in order to get a better ranking?

Thanks

Paul

Wrong question.

What do you want the website to achieve? What are your goals? Who are you prospective customers?

Once you have the answers you can think about the domainname - find somethying that encapsulates your objective. If you want to sell secondhand cars to mums then buy cars4mums.com. If you sell cushions for cats then buy cushions4cats.com.

Your keywords will develop and change over time and as they do you will generate new pages, the filename of which should reflect the topic of that page.

There is a tiny benefit in buying lots of domains and linking them all to one site but it's really not worth the effort (and cost). Concentrate instead on writing stunning content that converts every single visitor.

Effective Web Design - It's not that difficult if you follow the rules.

I would agree with the post above that goals and the overall vision for the site is very important. I would not worry about domains at all just focus on your site and building relevant content. The SEO will help get the site in the right spot in the search results.

Thereīs another consideration about your question. Donīt use different domains, if itīs makes sense, from a user point of view, to keep your content within the same domain. Otherwise youīd be multiplying your efforts to build the popularity of your domains.

Not quite sure what you mean Fox.... are you thinking of something like DIY.COM which takes you to the B&Q website?
