Re: How to Improve PR ? - 17-04-2008, 05:36 AM

As many of you are probably already aware, Google ranks a page according to the number and quality of links leading to that page. For example, if your page has 100 quality links leading to it, it will rank higher than another page that has only 20 links pointing at it. Quality links come from pages that are themselves "important" (Google's own terminology). So you make some effort on SEO/Viral Marketing to boost up ur webiste.

I think there has been some excellent advice here, so far. As fisicx has said, PR should not be a concern at the moment - I think it is likely that Google will allow it to be an important ranking factor again, but at the moment it is not - rankings and traffic are important though.

If anything new and exciting is happening with your company or website it is worth writing an interesting Press Release and submit it to PRWeb.com under the $200 SEO visibility option, if you can. This will drive some strong, focused visits to your site and have a positive seo influence (Although some SEOers will disagree with me!).

Good luck.

Mischa

Does PR affect search engine ranking?

You need to understand the difference between PageRank and ranking.

PageRank is calculated from the number and quality of link within and inbound to a website. The calculations are very complex and kept very secret. What you can see is a Toolbar PageRank on the google toolbar. This is a simplified summary of the actual PageRank. The important thing to note is that it not just the number on inbound links but the quality of those links.

Google uses PageRank as one of over 500 different criteria to determine the ranking of a webpage (not website) in the search engine results page. It is quite common to see a page with PR0 ranking higher than a page with PR3 for a specific set of keywords.

For example. The PR3 page ranks well for 'widgets' but the PR0 page ranks better for 'green plastic widgets.

I don't actually use the google toolbar (it's a bit of spyware) so have no idea what the PR of any particular page is - I'm more concerned about the relevance of the page to my search criteria. You should concentrate on building informative and interesting pages that add value to the index.

PR and ranking could be said to go hand in hand, but I dont even think their bond is that close - PR is more of a rough indication of how well you doing SEO-wise in Google - basically the higher it is, the better in quantity and quality you links are, which is a major ranking factor.

Don't worry too much about PR though, although Google are making sure it does mean more and more these days.

fisicx - I have heard it is Spyware, in what way is it it spyware - in the way of measuring your online activity?

Many thanks

Misch

I'd say a good way to improve backlinks is to join a forum and then really drag out an inane question about improving your page rank using loads of separate replies with your website in your signature block, oh, you already have, well done!

I think there is a co-relation. A higher PR site is given a higher ranking than a lower PR site - in such a case where two competing site for one keyword would have the same ranking score in SERP.

Not always. It is quite possible for a PR0 page (not site) to rank higher than a PR3 page as I explained in my earlier post.

misch.chief - the TOS for the google toolbar tells you that they track your internet history. By definition this is spyware. Definition of Spyware

Spyware is not adware.

Yes, but improving your PR should be secondary to increasing your conversion rate. It would be better to work on getting a 5% or even 10% conversion rate rather than chasing inbound links. In any case, because of the business you are in the sort of links you need will not be easy to find.
