Here's a neat piece of software which will show you why your competitors ranks so well in google
You know the importance of links ? Well this shows you all the links that point to any site and the anchor text within them. So you can then go off to those places and find the links. More here

Does that actually work Peter?
Looks like a very dodgy spam advert!

Personally, if I want to know why a competitor ranks well (which isn't often, as I don't bother with SEO much - most of my business is generated through networking) then I just dive into the HTML of the site, and pick it apart. Now, i recognise that this isn't possible for people who aren't fluent in HTML, but it seems to me to be the best way.
Plus, if you want to check out their links, you can do that with google. It's not that hard...

to answer......
yes, the page does look v spammy, but it's an excellent product
Pete - your way is perfect, but additionally:
- google only shows a small selection - Y! and MSN the full set
- to be able to order by PR, title of page, text in the link etc, s/ware will be the fastest
mind you, you can do this in a spreadsheet - just hard if you want to keep updating it each week...

I like my way. Yes, it takes longer and it's more work, but I don't trust software. Anything that claims to help get better search rankings is generally a bit of a con. I'm an "elbow grease" person.

Oh, and you may be interested in my project, which goes live in 10 days...

I use it and it works great!
It is up to date on what your competitors are using and what links they are getting. It will also e-mail to those links for you.
Just a tool not all there is.
