Having a billion incoming links from other sites isn't much good if those billion websites aren't highly ranked themselves. In fact in some cases, it can be detrimental.

I agree with eagle. However, what we sometimes forget that the Internet is full of trends and it does not take long before they become common practice by webmasters. The buzz words bounding around the net at the moment are backlinks, content is king (still) and dropshipping.

Why cant we all do our jobs as webmasters. Build and engineer the website to high standards in accordnace with the W3C, create quality content and not try and find caveates to con the search engines.

Life would be alot more simple, and the constant quest for fools gold in the SEO world would be a quieter place.

Your so correct.

Googles maintains that designing a site which is good for users will get you to rank well. And this principal does not change with trends of webmasters activities.

A million SEO techniques isnt helping users.

You need to be really careful with google. Its not the matter of million of links, its all about quality related links.

I know someone who had 100 links on starting of the month and 2000 at end of the month. Google 'sandbox' the link to establish their validity.

OK, but that wont have a negative impact on your rankings, it just wont have a positive.

Remember that NOTHING outside of your control (eg who links to you ect) damages your rankings.... Its your content and outbound link which can be damageing.

Wrong. If you take part in a link exchange program then you are controlling who links to you.

The robots will soon work out that there is a reciprocal link arrangement and penalise you.

Agree however that inbound links will not harm you (too much) so long as there is not reciprocal outbound link.

It would be the outbound link back that would harm you, not the inbound link.

Or do you know better than google how it works. It states quite clearly that the actions of other sites and users can NOT harm your placings. Should you choose to read googles own information provided at google.com.

Re: link back from others - 08-05-2006, 04:52 PM

There has been quite a lot of discussion on other forums over the whole inbound/outbound link issue. And there is a lot of discussion over how the SE rates inbound links.

And I would agree that inbound links on the whole will not harm your SE ranking. But posting all over the net in blogs, forums, newsgroups etc will be noticed by the indexing robots. And if those links are associated with identical posts, or no real post at all then you may well be penalized.

So my point was that inbound links can hurt. You can claim that you have no control over who links to you but you can influence the type of site that does link to you.

Apologies for my rash statment. You were correct.

But only (as you say) over those those links over which you have no control.
