My point exactly. Learn the basics and apply them. I have a site that is number one and two in google for really competitive marketing related keywords

And I am not really savvy when it comes to these geeky things

Yeah, i agree here ! Basic is must to learn and than you should apply it with your site.

It depends on the keywords you are going to optimize and the competition for that keywords
