I recently wrote an article about SEO and marketing clashing when it came to website design.

w w w. blindmonkeymedia.com/marketing-articles/54-eo-and-marketing-website-design-natural-enemies

I wrote it after I was hired by a company to do their SEO and I was constantly battling with their marketing director about the design of the website.

Anyway, the answer is clear but the question that I have in mind is what is the best approach to convince a marketing manager or director to be flexible enough in changing some of the website design for SEO purposes?

SEO is a part or marketing in web business. so I think there is no battle between SEO and Marketing.
if Marketing is a full body then SEO is the eyes of this body. without SEO web marketing is like handicapped.

I think it's a fairly simple argument. No point in having a wonderful website if no one finds it!

I didn't consider SEO seriously enough when we developed our site and I've learned from experience that it's something that you have to get right from the start - if I could go back and do it all again SEO would be priority and branding would have been my secondary concern.

This holds true if you have a small online company or no real advertising budget.

However, businesses like godaddy.com, ebay and such do not need SEO and did not even consider it as part of their marketing strategy.

For example, if you do a search for "website hosting" or "web hosting "on Google, GoDaddy.com is not even on the first result page even though they do offer that service. In any case, you dont see them hurting for online business.

Another example is, Ebay.com. If you do a search for "online auction" on Google they also do not appear on the first page yet, they are the biggest online auction company.

I don't think there is a conflict.

SEO is part of SEM which is part of marketing. If the business does very well without ranking #1 for XYZ then does it really matter if their SEO is poor.

If the marketing manger is given the facts and choses to take a different marketing path then that's their descision. Not something I'm going to lose any sleep over.

i think SEO and marketing are both the same...

because, when we do SEO like classifieds we also market our site

so that users will visit or buy something to the site
