Search engine marketing is different from search engine optimization. SEO optimization concentrates on gaining higher SEO rankings whereas SEO marketing concentrates on both Paid as well as Organic marketing options made available by search engines. SEO marketing is more focussed on business objectives of your website and can help you gain more traffic and clicks instantly.

Google adwords is one of the most effective Paid marketing techniques. It can help your website to gain more visibility under search engines.

Yahoo also offers similar feature which is known as Sponsored Search. However, there are certain tips which you must follow while promoting your business online through Google adwords or Yahoo's Sponsored Search.

I do not agree, Google adwords is very very competitive in some markets. With other PPC advertisers you can often get a better ROI.

However if you want lots of PPC traffic Google adwords is the place to be.

I have been getting a lot of exposure through AdWords so far. Not much on my return, but I expect that to change. I am only using this until I can get my google rank up, but I have generated quite a few hits from this.

How many of those hits have translated into leads?

So far, I have maxed out my click throughs each day, which translates into about 7 or 8 click throughs per day. So out of 24 click throughs, I have 2 leads, one of which has already placed a significant order.

I am getting a ton of exposure though in already having had well over 1,000 impressions. Even if they are not clicking on me yet, at least I am getting some exposure.

My budget is $5/day with $1 max per click through. The average click through costs me around $.80. The two pieces of business that I have generated so far have been a large article order for $357 and a niche blog services inquiry.

That's not bad but you should be able to improve your CTR from 0.25%. A well written advert (your speciality) could easily pull 10% clicks and if the landing page is optimised for the specific advert then conversions of 20% or more are not unheard of. So instead of 2 leads per 1000 impressions you could be getting 20-30 leads which really increase your chances of conversion.

Agreed with janhindrik. Google Adwords is highly competitive and has an abundance of PPC traffic. PPC programs such as Bing, MSN, and Yahoo Overture will give you a good ROI as well...minus the competitive risks such as "google slapping".
