I had a page that ranked quite well - but the description tag was for another page completely - I corrected the description and nothing changed - not even a single place in the SERPs.

If you read the SEOmoz survey nearly everyone agrees that the description is a useful marketing tool but of no SEO value.

The test is easy. Put a real word in your description but not in the title, headers, content or anyhere else on the page, Wait for the page to be indexed then search for that word. You won't appear in the index. I'm so confident that I'd put a bet on it.

Take the link text out otherwise google will pick-up the anchor text but highlight the word in the description.
