But directories are almost useless aren't they?

Wow not too sure how long your site has been running, but I put www.ebsilk.com into my Link Popularity Checker software, and you have just 1, yes 1 link and it is on MSN Search Engine.
You need to point your search engine to Yahoo or Altavista and where it says Submit your web site you should do that on both named search engines.
Those 2 alone will log your site FREE within a few days wait, faster if you want to pay.
Then within a month those 2 engines will spider your site all over the Internet to many other search engines.
Do not waste your precious time by changing your pages to suit Google (lots do) because you will not get high ranks in all the other search engines if you do.
Good luck, and all the best.

You need to get yourself a new link checking tool!

Even Google's naff link tool shows 88 inbounds: http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&safe=...e174d94ab45a5e

You are completly 100% wrong to suggest yahoo and alta vista will share their indexing results with the other search engines. In case there is no point in asubmitting to these search engines if the site is already in their index (which it is).

Futher more it is disingenuous to suggest that optimising a page for Google with cause your ranking to fail in the other search engines.

Once again David, you are making false and unsubtantiated cliams

I have just added your site domain name into my search engine popularity checker, and you have just 1 engine that gives you 1, yes one link and it is MSN Google 0 Yahoo 0 etc etc.
May I just say that like 1000s of other website owners you are wasting time needlessly with Google, submit your site url to the other search engines that welcome your url better, once listed on them your away.
Some websites that have been live and updated often for 10 years wont ever get listed on Google, but more people will find you on MSN/Yahoo etc once you submit.
Good luck.
David

David,

You need to get yourself a new checker, Google is showing 554 inbound links for ebsilk.co.uk and yahoo has a similar number.

If your site is not listed it is, as I have said many times, because you have not followed the Google guidelines. Do this and you will be indexed and ranked by Google in a matter or days.

Well, its often happen in SEO process that some times, you get some good ranking and the PR and sometimes, you get the less one, so you don't worry and continue the process of optimization and after some time may be after a month, you will get a goo rank... and also a good page rank too...
